Vision
Kamehameha - Kapalama is a big campus. Kamehameha holds 3,192 students in grades K-12. Our school is a big place and and with a big place, there comes big problems. One of the problems that our group sees and would like to work on to improve is waste. There are several forms of waste like water waste, food waste and trash waste. Our particular group will be focusing on trash waste. Kamehameha has a recycling program that has been in place since the 1980's. Our group's focus is to learn more about the recycling at our school and how we can get more participation. Our first plan was to make students more aware of recycling by creating "recycling bins" that would be placed near each trash can on our upper high school campus. We thought that by making recycling more visible and accessible it would encourage students to recycle more. However after gaining a little more knowledge of where we are as of whole campus recycling, we see that it might be a little better to address the younger students as well. As far as we know, there is not very much information about recycling on the lower campuses. In order for our whole school to be known as a zero-waste campus, we need to find more ways of recycling our waste rather than throwing them in the trash which end up in landfills. Being that we already have a current recycling program on our high school campus, it would make more sense to branch out and make the younger ones more aware of recycling as well. Our vision is to get to "zero-waste" and in order to do that we all need to be informed. |
